Beyond the Visual Archive: Calgary Cultural Practitioner Expands His Work Through Sound and Music

DATE :

DEADLINE: November 29, 2026 - 5:00 pm

Filipino-Canadian cultural preservation practitioner Rolando Jr. Pepano is extending his creative practice beyond historical visual reconstruction, exploring original songwriting and sound as additional ways to communicate identity, memory, migration, and human experience.

CALGARY, Alberta — October 2026 — For Calgary-based cultural practitioner Rolando Jr. Pepano, storytelling has increasingly moved beyond the visual image.

Known for his work in cultural preservation and historical visual reconstruction through BOYVAULT™, Pepano is expanding his independent creative practice into original music and sound-based storytelling.

The development reflects a growing interest in how different artistic disciplines can communicate experiences that are difficult to preserve through images and written records alone.

While visual research can help audiences engage with historical subjects, music offers another way to explore memory, emotion, identity, and belonging.

From visual interpretation to musical expression

Pepano established BOYVAULT™ in Calgary in 2024 as an emerging independent visual institution focused on masculine anthropology, archival research, and cultural preservation.

Its work includes Advanced Visual Reconstruction, a research-informed methodology used to develop visual interpretations of historical people and environments.

The practice examines how surviving documentary evidence can inform contemporary representations of the past, while distinguishing reconstructed imagery from original historical records.

As his visual work developed, Pepano began exploring songwriting as another form of creative expression.

Rather than attempting to reproduce the historical archive through sound, his musical work approaches storytelling through personal experiences, emotional memory, and themes shared across cultures.

The two disciplines remain distinct but are connected by his interest in human experience.

Building a separate musical practice

Through SONIC EDGE STUDIO™, an independent music production and release studio based in Calgary, Pepano has been developing and releasing original compositions.

The studio operates separately from BOYVAULT™, allowing each initiative to maintain its own creative purpose and identity.

His music explores subjects including migration, relationships, identity, resilience, and belonging.

Among his original compositions, Thirty Years addresses identity and self-acceptance, while UWI, a Tagalog-language song, reflects on the experiences of overseas Filipino workers and the emotional meaning of returning home.

Other works explore the relationships and responsibilities people carry through different stages of life.

The expansion does not represent a departure from visual cultural preservation. Instead, it broadens the forms of storytelling through which Pepano engages with human experience.

Exploring memory across artistic disciplines

Pepano's approach has been influenced by his own experiences of migration.

Originally from the Philippines, he began working overseas in 2009 before moving to Canada in 2012.

His background in food service, immigration, and cultural research has informed an interest in people whose experiences are often documented through work, movement, and public records but whose personal stories may remain less visible.

Visual reconstruction and music offer different possibilities for exploring these subjects.

An image can invite audiences to consider the appearance and historical context of a person or place.

A song can explore feelings associated with separation, uncertainty, belonging, or remembrance.

Neither medium can fully represent an individual's life, but each can contribute to a broader conversation about identity and cultural memory.

An evolving interdisciplinary practice in Alberta

Pepano's expansion into music reflects the ways independent artists may develop practices across traditional disciplinary boundaries.

His work now encompasses historical visual interpretation, archival storytelling, original songwriting, and recorded music.

Through BOYVAULT™, he continues developing research-informed visual preservation projects.

Through SONIC EDGE STUDIO™, he is building a separate musical practice centred on original compositions and human experiences.

The ongoing development reflects a commitment to exploring storytelling through multiple creative forms, without treating any one medium as a substitute for another.

For Pepano, the relationship between visual work and music is not simply about changing artistic disciplines.

It is about recognizing that some experiences can be documented through images, others can be expressed through sound, and many require more than one way of being remembered.
