Exhibition, Reception and Artist Talk - "Being and Becoming"

DATE :

DEADLINE: February 28, 2026 - 10:45 pm

Gallery@501 in Sherwood Park (501 Festival Ave) is pleased to present "Being and Becoming," a new exhibition at Gallery@501 featuring Edmonton artists Garfield Morgan and Tere Cuellar. Both artists invite viewers to consider the evolving nature of identity and community through exploration of concepts, heritage, resistance, acceptance, and observation.

Garfield Morgan blends vibrant African wax fabrics with traditional Yoruba imagery and contemporary painting techniques. His portraits depict confident Black/African individuals, challenging stereotypes and celebrating resilience and beauty. Through dynamic color, rhythm, and texture, Morgan creates works that affirm identity and invite reflection on an ever-evolving journey of becoming.

Tere Cuellar uses painting as a method of knowledge, expressing concepts of resistance and acceptance rooted in memory and lived experience. Her contemporary oil portraits and figurative works explore vulnerability, compassion, and healing. Through expressive hands, nuanced facial gestures, and rich contrasts of color and tone, Cuellar’s art speaks to self-acceptance and the complexity of human emotion.

If you are interested in meeting with the artists, we welcome you to attend a special reception on January 24, 2026, at 1:00 pm where the artists will be in attendance and provide talks. If unable to attend the reception, please visit Gallery@501 between January 15 – February 28, 2026, to view the display. Visitors can engage in a hands-on drawing activity in the exhibit, further exploring identity and portraiture.

Thank you for spreading the word to your contact and community. We hope you can join us!
