ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM
r e s o n a n c e
groundcubed acknowledges that the privilege we have to pursue our passions is nestled within the homeland of diverse communities and Nations of First Peoples. It is with great thanks to them, and all our kin, that we live and grow here. We stand as active allies to them in (re)conciliation and in building a bright and flourishing future together.
About Resonance
resonance manifested from a desire to cultivate community, through integrity, innovation, and creativity, at the intersection of art and design. From curious, collaborative, and creative values, we are building a space for ideas to resonate, where ideas are drawn together, and where ideas amplify one another.
The Artist in Residence program will provide artists with time, space, and support to pursue and thrive in their creative practice.
Our goal with resonance is to create meaningful opportunities for artists, to foster reciprocal relationships within the arts and design community, and to provide space for artists to explore freely within a landscape architecture, design-centred studio. This allows for creative exchanges to happen organically.
Landscape (ART)itechture
Our practice at groundcubed is defined by the collective power of individuals who are passionate about infusing life, artistry, and impact into every natural and urban environment we touch. We are a group of landscape architects, urban planners, architects and artists who remain curious about the world around us and the way we engage in collaborative design process(es). We thrive alongside like-minded creators with ambitious ideas.
As designers we look to the site and its context first, to understand the unique physical, ecological and cultural characteristics that create its sense-of-place. We seek to preserve and enhance site elements that benefit our social and environmental well-being, while proposing new ways of using and interacting with the spaces we find ourselves in.
Placemaking is a foundational element of this practice, which is informed by many of the same ideas that motivate artistic practices: curiosity, questioning tradition, enabling coexistence, generating beauty and enhancing harmony (or disharmony). Our motivating ethos is the betterment of the cities, parks, and wilderness that we exist in, and facilitating their enjoyment, stewardship and use by all.
resonance seeks to provide a collaborative testing ground which channels the unique abilities of Artists to move beyond traditional approaches to design, uncovering new methods, media and materials, and reinterpreting the approaches of other disciplines. “The power of the arts to anticipate future social and technological developments, by a generation and more, has long been recognized.” wrote Marshall McLuhan. The intent is to create fertile ground where Artists can be empowered, new ideas can be generated and produced, which will inform the future of these practices, both artistic and architectural.
The Questions Resonance Asks of the Artist:
How does your practice as an artist inform our practice, and how does our practice inform yours? Where do you see resonance in our collective practices, and what is cultivated through that mutual exchange?
Program Description
resonance is a four-week residency running from June 1, 2026, until June 26, 2026. This residency is available for artists in any stage of their career (emerging, mid-career, or established), and an opportunity for interdisciplinary exchange. This will be the inaugural/pilot residency at groundcubed and will take place in the Edmonton studio. The Artist in Residence will have access to the studio Monday to Friday from 9am-5pm during the four-week period.
Because the residency is situated within a design studio, there are medium and equipment limitations relating to ventilation and safety. There could be opportunity to use the residency materials budget or stipend to rent alternate specific space required to produce the body of work, but we ask the artist to dedicate a reasonable amount of time within the groundcubed studio.
Program Overview
Produce a Body of Work: The Artist in Residence will have four weeks to produce a self-directed body of work that responds to our landscape (ART)itechture practice. We ask each artist applicant to propose a high-level project plan on how they will spend their four weeks at groundcubed.
Skill-Share Team Workshop: During the residency, the Artist will facilitate an afternoon Skill-Share Team Building Workshop for groundcubed team members in any medium of their choice. The Artist is expected to provide a workshop proposal within their application. Please also include proposed materials for the workshop in your materials budget.
Art Exhibit Reception: groundcubed will host a one-evening Art Exhibit Reception where the Artist in Residence’s body of work will be installed in the groundcubed studio. This evening will be a unique opportunity for the Artist to celebrate their work and experience, while exchanging ideas with supporters, peers, partners, and collaborators.
Artist Talk: On the evening of the Art Exhibit Reception, the Artist will provide an Artist Talk to share their process, research, experience, and contextualize the final body of work to invited guests, including their peers and groundcubed team and collaborators.
