Artist Profile: Maureen Callihoo and Kiona Callihoo Ligtvoet

DATE :

DEADLINE: May 14, 2026 - 7:00 pm

Family history, Indigenous culture, and the integral role of strong matriarchs strongly inform the art and creativity of visual artists Maureen Callihoo and her daughter Kiona Callihoo Ligtvoet. Both of them are members of the Michel First Nation and their family lines are Cree and Métis.

With two artworks presented as one, Heart Piece (2023 and 2024) highlights the connection between generations, symbolizing the stories and traditions passed down through the art of beading and painting. It is also an expression of the strong women in their family, the matriarchs of yesterday, today, and those to come tomorrow.

On Thursday, May 14, 2026 from 7 to 8 pm, Maureen and Kiona will be discussing this artwork at the AFA art house in Calgary (150 9 Ave SW, 2nd floor) for an After Hours artist talk: Care, Creativity, and Generations: A Fireside Conversation.

Doors open at 6:30 pm with time to mix and mingle until 8:30 pm.

We’d love to see you there!
