The Citadel Theatre, one of Canada’s largest and busiest professional, not-for-profit theatre companies and facilities, has an opening for a full-time permanent Assistant Technical Director. The Assistant Technical Director assists the Technical Director in ensuring high quality production values for all Citadel productions and co-productions. Making appropriate use of our facilities, human, and financial resources to support the production crews.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Create, maintain, and distribute crew schedules for the Staging, Lighting, Sound, and Video Crews.
• Schedule and supervise production department labour in accordance with approved production and overhead budgets, as assigned by the Technical Director.
• Liaise with Designers on behalf of the relevant department heads for pre-production preparations.
• Provide Designers with required venue drawings, inventories, and other production information as directed by the Technical Director.
• Create technical drawings for the shops as assigned by the Technical Director.
• Research materials, equipment, and techniques that may be required to execute construction of production elements.
• Coordinate with the TD team and Department heads to ensure efficient and safe installation of production elements and technology in the performance venues.
• Estimate production element costs and labour requirements assigned by the Technical Director.
• Procure materials for the production shops in accordance with approved production and overhead budgets.
• Ensure all crews working under the ATD’s supervision do so in a safe and respectful manner, abiding by Citadel policies and Health and Safety Regulations.
• Attend rehearsals and performances to record and distribute work notes to department heads.
• Support ATD: Rentals and Events and Production Manager as directed by the Technical Director.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Education: Post Secondary Technical Theatre Education is an asset.
• Experience: 5 years working in professional theatre production departments.
• Skills:
  • Proficiency with Vectorworks
  • Ability to create, maintain, and interpret CAD files.
  • Proficient with MS365 Office suite and other common office applications.
  • Familiar with all aspects of stagecraft. Proficient in at least one.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills suitable for corresponding with external clients.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience supervising or working in an IATSE Union environment.
• Experience working as a carpenter, props builder, or painter
• Fall Protection Training
• Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWP) / Aerial work platform training.
• Valid Driver’s License

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to travel for limited periods of time to support co-productions or tours.
• Ability to work evenings and weekends as required by the production schedule.
• Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and navigate construction sites with uneven surfaces.

Three of these artists are  also represented in the AFA Art Collection: Braxton Garneau, Kiona Callihoo Ligtvoet and Kablusiak. In addition, Braxton Garneau and Kiona Callihoo Ligtvoet are currently represented in the New Views exhibition at the AFA art house in Calgary, which recently opened its gallery space to the public in September.

About the Artists

Braxton Garneau

Braxton Garneau is a visual artist based in amiskwaciwâskahikan (Edmonton). A MacEwan University alumnus, Garneau graduated in 2017 with a Fine Art diploma. He works across mediums such as painting, printmaking and installation using a wide range of materials such as asphalt, sugar cane and raffia. His work has been acquired by numerous public and private collections including the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, which acquired his work Pitch Lake (Pietà) in 2024 through the Northern Trust Purchase Prize at EXPO Chicago.

Kiona Callihoo Ligtvoet 

Kiona Callihoo Ligtvoet is an artist based in amiskwaciwâskahikan (Edmonton). She is a MacEwan University alumnus who graduated with a Fine Art diploma in 2017. Working in a variety of disciplines including painting, printmaking, drawing and installation, her art explores intergenerational grief, memory, family history, loss and enfranchisement. Ligtvoet is the recipient of multiple awards, and her debut graphic novel, We Were Younger Once (2022), was nominated for the Doug Wright Award for emerging talent.

Kablusiak

Kablusiak is a multidisciplinary Inuvialuk artist and curator based in Mohkinstsis (Calgary). They are a MacEwan University alumnus who graduated with a Fine Art diploma in 2013. Their practice explores Inuit queerness, sexuality, comedy and nostalgia as well as feelings of displacement and loss. Kablusiak has been recognized through numerous awards such as the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Award (2020 & 2023), the Kenojuak Ashevak Memorial Award (2021 recipient, 2023 shortlist) and the Sobey Art Award (2019 shortlist, 2023 recipient).

About the New Views exhibition

New Views is the inaugural exhibition of the AFA art house in Calgary. The exhibition features 50 unique artworks from 40 extraordinary Alberta artists acquired within the last 10 years that represent only a sampling of the extensive collection of artworks in the vault of the AFA Art Collection. It is part of our goal to make more of the art from our collection available for the public to enjoy.

About the AFA art house

The AFA art house, located in the heart of downtown Calgary, is a space to for Albertans to see, discover, and experience the unique stories the artists of Alberta have to share. The Gallery will showcase works from the AFA Art Collection as well as other works from Alberta artists. The AFA art house is free to access.

Reporting to the Front of House Manager, the FOH Supervisor is responsible for providing excellent customer service to patrons and clients attending performances or events at The Citadel Theatre. They are responsible for managing Front of House Staff and Volunteers on shift, and coordinating between Front of House, Hospitality and Box Office Operations, and the Back of House/Stage Management Team.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Patron Ingress and Egress: as required, troubleshoot ticket scanners and help scan patrons’ tickets, solve seating issues (including but not limited to: double seatings, patrons wishing to move, and patrons who cannot get to their seat), know the theatre and building layouts and important locations within the complex, allow or disallow entry to the theatre as needed, facilitate the entry of latecomers, and other tasks related to the flow and movement of patrons.
• Patron Experience: ensure a positive patron experience, answer and address patrons’ questions, comments and concerns, have a thorough knowledge of the Citadel Theatre’s Season and other goings-on in the building, pass patron feedback to management, suggest and implement changes to improve patron experience.
• Safety: have a thorough knowledge of emergency and safety procedures. As required, be a first responder in emergencies, provide first aid, maintain and ensure adherence to theatre and safety rules, and other tasks related to maintaining the safety of patrons, staff and volunteers.
• Reporting: as required, complete and distribute FOH Show Reports, write incident reports as needed.
• Volunteer Management: as required, establish positive relationships with volunteers, ensure volunteers are completing the tasks assigned to them, schedule volunteers, log volunteer hours, communicate with volunteers about upcoming shifts, communicate with volunteers about missed shifts, monitor the volunteer email, address inappropriate volunteer behaviour

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• 2 to 3 years of customer service experience.
• Experience handling cash.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, and the ability to troubleshoot a variety of technological equipment.
• Standard First Aid – Level C CPR & AED Certification, or the willingness to be certified.
• AGLC ProServe Certification, or the willingness to be certified.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• The ability to think on your feet and come up with solutions as problems arise.
• The ability to adapt and adjust to a variety of situations, and to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
• The ability to lead a team and be the primary point of contact on shift.
