As reported in many news outlets, on January 25th, Senator Tommy Banks passed away at the age of 81.

An incredible loss to our province, and indeed the country. Senator Banks was at the foundation of the creation of the AFA, and has been recognized (as recently as 2016, as one of the AFA 25 Influential Alberta Artists) for his contributions to the development of local art.

Senator Banks was a founding member of the Alberta Foundation for the Performing Arts, which was eventually amalgamated with other art foundations to form the Alberta Foundation for the Arts in 1991. Learn more about the AFA's origins.

From all of us at the AFA, our sincerest condolences to friends and family of Senator Tommy Banks: he was an icon of the Alberta arts community.
