The Alberta Foundation for the Arts Board Chair Mary Rozsa de Coquet has released the following statement in honour of Month of the Artist in Alberta:
The Government of Alberta has declared September as the Month of the Artist in Alberta. The Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) is proud to acknowledge and support this initiative by government to recognize and celebrate the many contributions and achievements of our province’s artists.
We know a vibrant arts and culture sector in Alberta makes our province a better place to live, grow and raise a family. The AFA is proud to play a role in supporting Alberta’s amazing artists for nearly 30 years. Now, more than ever, artists in our province need support from us all due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic which has dealt them a devastating blow. We can look to the Month of the Artist as a wonderful opportunity to explore, experience and connect with the diverse artists who call our province home, and with Month of the Artist taking place during the same month as Alberta Culture Days, there will be no shortage of arts activities to take in – both online and in person.
It also seems fitting that the Month of the Artist coincides with the AFA’s birth month. The AFA came into existence on September 6, 1991, with the passing of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Act. From that day on, the AFA has focused on helping Alberta artists grow and thrive, and as we head into our 30th year, we will continue to provide valuable support for our outstanding arts sector.
I hope Albertans will take some time this September to celebrate the Month of the Artist; and, to all the artists in Alberta, thank you for helping make our province a more beautiful and thought-provoking place to be.
