Work of the Week: Flutterby (Birchbark Letter)

Date: Apr 24, 2017

Happy Monday! Our Work of the Week is Flutterby (Birchbark Letter) by Joane Cardinal-Schubert.

“The Butterfly sits on the warm rock face – alighting momentarily on faded pictographs of another age. The “artwork” of our ancestors (pictographs) compared to the short life of this other beautiful object of the natural world. The letters above reflect the early use of Birch Trees to “write” missives of communication – their meaning obscured over time. All language began with picture writing.” - JCS

This painting will be featured in the upcoming retrospective exhibition at the Nickle Galleries “The Writing on the Wall: Dr. Joane Cardinal- Schubert, RCA” on display from September 21 – December 16, 2017.
