Kristen Keegan completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Alberta (2010) and was the Banff Artist in Residence at the Banff Centre from 2011-2014. Her work has been exhibited in the 2015 Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art, Parade Gallery, Exposure Photography Festival and Latitude 53 Gallery. She has travelled to attend residencies both remote and urban. In 2015, she was artist-in-residence for two months at Messen in Ålvik, a small factory town in Norway.
These artworks are from the Series “Promise of Water” and were produced after a residency in Iceland.
The artist states:
“Reduced from my own plein-air paintings of the ocean, these refer to the mediated landscape, artifacts of digital compression, and the tension between what can be deemed ‘generic’ and intimately known. Slowing processes of observation to multi-coloured bands, these works both deny and inhabit the gestural tendencies of paint.”
Throughout March 2018, we featured artwork acquired in 2017 from the Art Acquisitions by Application (AAA) program. See an overview of all artwork acquired in 2017 through AAA. AAA is designed to acquire contemporary works of art by any eligible Alberta artist. The annual deadline is April 1st. View application guidelines.
