Lighting Technician Performing Arts Practicum

Overview

Work with Banff Centre’s Lighting Team on all Banff Centre productions, presentations, residencies, conferences and outreach programs. Responsibilities may include hanging and focusing lighting equipment, working shows, operating, repairing and maintaining lighting equipment, and interpreting lighting plots. You will occasionally be required to assist other departments with activities such as load-ins, load-outs and setting up and striking temporary performance venues and production spaces.

You will have an opportunity to work with a wide variety of lighting instruments, as well as sophisticated lighting control systems. You will support various residency programs and work with a range of artists from multiple performing arts disciplines in the creation of new work.

What does the program offer?

You will learn the core skills required to be a lighting technician and work as a member of the Lighting Team to ensure the smooth delivery of Banff Centre’s production needs. This program offers one-on-one mentorship and coaching from our experienced professional staff.

You will leave Banff Centre with marketable skills and the confidence and competence to step into roles as a specialized professional. Our alumni can be found nationally and internationally working at dance, opera, music and theatre companies, and training at university and colleges including Cirque Du Soleil, the Stratford and Shaw Festivals, the National Theatre School, the National Arts Centre, the National Ballet of Canada and the Canadian Opera Company. Productions created at Banff Centre have toured in Canada and internationally.

Expect to work on a wide array of shows including theatre, music, opera and dance as presented by Banff Centre and with a range of artists at various career stages. In addition, the Lighting Team may present specialized workshops based on participants’ learning objectives.

Who should apply?

Ideal applicants will have completed formal theatre technical training at an accredited institution or have equivalent work experience with a passionate interest in the performing arts industry. They will be able to demonstrate strong organizational aptitude, be computer literate and have an interest in exploring theatre, music and live performance technologies. Potential applicants are aspiring professionals looking to develop their careers and capabilities, with interest in specializing in lighting as a profession.
