Job Opportunity - Executive Director, Alberta Band Association

The Alberta Band Association is a non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire well-rounded, passionate musicians through instrumental ensembles. We are seeking a dynamic and independent leader for the full-time position of Executive Director; this individual is someone who is strategic and forward thinking, capable of realizing the mission of the Association, and also able to effectively take on the challenge of hands-on, day to day involvement in the execution of our programs. This individual is someone who excels at building relationships with stakeholders, inspiring them with the vision of the Association and working to build a growing and committed membership.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for band music, band education, and the arts; they will have a track record for innovative thinking, perform well under stressful situations, and be able to leverage the human resources of the Association to effectively implement programs. They will have a history of achievement, the ability to build consensus and be driven by a desire to see ambitious projects through to completion.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the smooth operation of the Association, its programming and member engagement, and long term strategy and sustainability. 
Your role in the Association includes, but may not be limited to:
Program Delivery & Member Engagement:

  • membership engagement, retention and development
  • program delivery and logistics management
  • act as a key representative of the Association in the community
  • recruit and train volunteers

Financial & Operational Management:

  • budgeting, fund development and grant writing
  • supervision of ABA staff including the Operations Manager and Library Assistant
  • marketing and public relations plan development
  • complete and accurate record keeping and reporting for all Alberta Band Association programs

Long Term Strategy & Sustainability:

  • Support the board in governance and policy development
  • short and long term strategy development
  • advocate for the Alberta Band Association and its programs and services

Other job requirements include:

  • experience supervising, managing and leading staff and volunteers in a not-for-profit organization
  • experience working with a Board of Directors
  • exceptional project and financial management skills
  • experience with fund development and successful grant writing experience
  • an understanding of logistics and experience mounting large scale events
  • the ability to work independently
  • collaborative leadership and communication skills

The following skills and experience are considered assets:

  • experience in working across multiple digital platforms, website development, and social media
  • exceptional computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office and Quickbooks
  • post-secondary education in business, music, arts administration or another related field
  • a knowledge of instrumental band performance requirements (scores, parts, equipment and technical requirements, etc)

The Alberta Band Association is one Canada’s largest Provincial Band Associations with approximately 400 members and a program roster of 12-20 component programs annually. The Association’s programs involve and inspire youth, educators, and community members with immersive music experiences:

  • The ABA Festival of Bands is a highly regarded Provincial festival that has just completed its 46th season and regularly hosts over 150 school and community bands each year, providing them with performance opportunities and access to internationally recognized clinicians.
  • The Junior Honour Bands, Youth Wind Symphony of Alberta, and Youth Jazz Ensemble of Alberta bring together hundreds of student musicians each year from across the province to rehearse and perform together, inspiring young musicians through excellence in performance and encouraging them through community building.
  • The ABA is a founding member of the Music Conference Alberta, an annual provincial conference which regularly brings together hundreds of delegates and provides a wide range of professional development opportunities.

In addition to working at the Alberta Band Association’s Edmonton office, the successful candidate will be required to be on site for Alberta Band Association programs and available for committee and planning meetings, most of which take place on weekday evenings and weekends.  As several ABA programs take place outside of the City of Edmonton, the successful candidate will require a valid driver’s license and will be expected to provide their own transportation as required.
Hours: 40 hrs/week with flexibility in some weeks due to program implementation. 
Remuneration will be determined based on skills and experience: $60,000-$80,000/year.
