About The Friends

Since 1986, The Friends of University Hospitals have provided Edmonton patients, families, and hospital staff with comfort and inspiration through its programming. Funded by revenue from accessible retail experiences, grants, and fundraising activities, The Friends Arts in Healthcare program involves McMullen Gallery, University of Alberta Hospitals’ Permanent Art Collection and the Artists on the Wards Program.

Are you looking for experience working directly with groups of patients that will use all your tools as an art facilitator? The Friends Artist on the Wards program has an exciting opportunity for someone looking to grow their career as an artist in a hospital setting.

Bring the Friends vision of healing, caring and compassion for the hospital to life by sharing your gifts as an artist and making meaningful experiences for patients! We seek an energetic, experienced group art facilitator to join our Artists on the Wards team of visual, musical, and literary artists.

Artists on the Wards (AOW) staff work at the bedside and in group settings with acute-care adult patients in their artistic discipline.

AOW Artists facilitate projects in a variety of media tailored to specific situations. Depending on the patients’ abilities, the artist encourages hands-on participation, to facilitate learning and/or creative expression.

Artists will also be expected to contribute to the administration of the program by providing training and supervision to a team of volunteers, participating in volunteer recruitment and retention, developing strong relationships with hospital staff, and program or project development. Artists on the Wards may also be asked to make presentations or provide workshops.
