Festival City Winds Music Society
Invites You to Celebrate the Winter Solstice

Festival City Winds (Adult Concert Bands), under the direction of Artistic Director Wendy J. Grasdahl, invites you to celebrate the Winter Solstice through music on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 7:30PM in the Robert Tegler Centre, Concordia University of Edmonton (7128 Ada Boulevard – 73 St. south of 112 Ave.). The evening concert will feature all four Festival City Winds’ concert bands – Novice Band; Intermediate 2 Band; Intermediate 1 Band; Advanced Band – each performing their own selections. The bands will be conducted by Wendy J. Grasdahl and Dr. Eila Peterson. There will be a reception following the concert as well as door prizes.

The evening’s programme celebrates the time around the Winter Solstice with music from Celtic sources and holiday favourites – including an audience carol sing. There will be clever arrangements of Christmas classics – What Child Is This? (Greensleeves), Deck the Hall, Away in the Manger, Joy to the World, First Noel (a mash-up of The First Noel and Pachelbel’s Canon), and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing. There is also an arrangement of the 13th century Advent plainsong Divinum Mysterium, a trip to the Antarctic with Whale Warriors (based on the true story of Captain Paul Watson and his crew attempting to sink whaling ships), a host of Celtic-inspired music, and selections from the standard concert band canon of marches, waltzes, and other repertoire. The evening ends with the audience clapping along to Strauss’ Radetzky March.

Tickets for Winter Solstice are $12 for Adults and $5 for Children (12 and under), and can be purchased at the door.
