Development Director

The Calgary International Film Festival's mission is to entertain and engage audiences by curating the most innovative and compelling films, and creating remarkable festival experiences.



  • Participates in strategic and business planning, especially as it relates to necessary partnerships and fundraising
  • Works with Executive Director to establish annual revenue targets for sponsorship, donations, advertising, fundraising events, and all project and operational grants


  • Creates and maintains sponsorship marketing materials
  • Maintains an organized system of sponsorship tiers, properties and benefit/recognition valuations
  • Develops systems to effectively deliver sponsor recognition and benefits, in cooperation with other departments, and to track deliverables
  • Develops and manages current and potential sponsor relationships, including prospects, contracts, renewals, events, brand alignment and ROI measurement

Public Funding & Granting

  • Researches new public sector and foundation granting sources
  • Plans, with the Executive Director, the annual grant applications
  • Writes and submits project and operational grant applications and final reports in collaboration with other staff and departments as appropriate


  • Oversees the planning and execution of the donor program
  • Ensures compliance with CRA regulations regarding charitable donations


  • Manages advertising sales, including print, online and on-screen
  • Creates the advertising rate & spec sheet in cooperation with Marketing


  • Manages the department budget
  • Plans and negotiates all major organization-to-organization partnership agreements, including media partners, venue agreements and official suppliers (in collaboration with other staff accordingly)
  • Manages the festival’s Key List of individual stakeholders and community influencers
  • Oversees the departmental staff (Business Development Coordinator)
  • Proofs all partner, sponsor and donor-related content produced by Marketing
  • Provides regular progress reports to Executive Director



  • Relevant post-secondary education, including degrees and/or certificates in, fundraising, arts administration, event management and/or marketing are considered an asset


  • At least 5 – 7 years of practical experience developing, cultivating, soliciting, closing, stewarding and evaluating major sponsorships of $50,000 and above
  • Professional experience managing a team, both staff and volunteer
  • Practical experience managing membership programs and/or annual giving campaigns
  • Strong understanding of financial data and basic understanding of accounting required
  • Knowledge of and experience adhering to CRA guidelines
  • Experience collaborating with partners and stakeholders from across sectors
  • Experience collaborating with non-fundraising focused colleagues on proposals, stewardship materials and reports
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Calgary’s arts community is considered an asset
  • Experience with relational databases and/or CRM platforms

  • Proficiency in standard Microsoft Office software applications, especially Excel
  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Demonstrated discretion with confidential materials

Employment Type: Full-time, permanent employee
Start Date: February 20, 2018 or as negotiated
Hours: Work schedule is typically Monday through Friday. Involves some evenings and weekends, especially during the festival.
Reporting to: Executive Director
Supervising: A small team of part-time/seasonal staff and volunteers.
Salary/fee: Commensurate with experience
