Call for Submissions Heavy Metal

  • Site: Casa Lethbridge, 230 8 St S, Lethbridge, AB
  • Artist fee: $2000
  • Deadline: October 31, 2021

The Gallery at Casa is calling for submissions for a significant exhibition called Heavy Metal that will be running from June 18 – August 20, 2022. This exhibition will have several components, including an interior gallery display and an outdoor sculpture component. This call is for our exterior sculpture project, which will be part of a large celebratory ribbon-cutting event and festival.

A redevelopment project in the heart of downtown has been ongoing on 3 Avenue by the City of Lethbridge. As part of this construction project, streetcar tracks have been discovered buried below the tarmac. These tracks were used by a streetcar that ran the length of 3 Avenue from 1912 to 1947. The track was buried in road construction circa 1949. The tracks have since been excavated and removed in order to facilitate new sewer installation and modification of the layout of 3 Avenue. The Allied Arts Council of Lethbridge, in cooperation with the City, has saved various lengths of this streetcar track for the use of artists.

We are seeking 2 artists to realize significant outdoor sculptures or installations that will in some way utilize or incorporate these pieces of heavy metal. These temporary works will be installed on Rotary Square, a large cement plaza on the eastside of the Casa facility for the length of the exhibition. Each artist will be paid a development and exhibition fee of $2000. Preference will be given to artists with a current or past connection to our community. Interested artists are invited to look at the material and location by booking a site visit, or via photographs.

Thematic considerations:
It is important to excavate, and reflect upon, the history of our community. More often than not, the historical excavations we do are metaphorical and deal with interpreting documents, photographs, and stories. Currently, with the 3 Avenue redevelopment, we get to see history actually unearthed and excavated in the form of monumental beams of steel. Each section of streetcar track is a silent repository of stories, mute and waiting for an artist to give them a voice. We hope that this sort of raw material, with so much historical significance, provides an opportunity to create something ambitious, unique, and engaging.

Submission Requirements:
– A short prospectus outlining the proposed work. Please consider safety and security.
– 10 examples of past work
– A brief artist statement
– A short biographical sketch
– Current CV

Please send proposals or questions via email to using “Heavy Metal Submission” in the subject line.
