Calgary Chinese Orchestra 2018 Annual Concert: Myths and Legends

Date: Jun 2, 2018

Every culture and civilization has myths and legends which are passed on for generations. Looking back on our own long history, we found music that was inspired by, created for and celebrated with these stories.

Fantasy of Kavalan as inspired by the beautiful, tragic love story told by Taiwan indigenous people. Bumper Harvers Worship, composed by Chinese/Canadian composer Guan Naizhong, is a ancient worship still practiced by many tribes in Taiwan region. We will also be telling 2 stories from 200 BC during Chu-Han Contention: Ambush from Ten Sides, a Pipa classic piece written in “Wu” or Martial style; as well as Deep Night, which features the Lady General Yu Ji’s sword dance accompanied by the Jinghu.

This year marks our 21st anniversary and we would like to invite YOU to come celebrate with us! We have also transitioned to the Mount Royal University Conservatory back in January 2018 to enhance our rehearsal area and open more performance/music education opportunities for our members. On top of that, we have also welcomed Ms. Jiajia Li (an award winning local flautist) as one of our artistic directors to enhance our group performance.
