On March 22, Alberta’s government announced details of its 2018-19 budget. In Budget 2018, funding for the Alberta Foundation for the Arts was maintained at $31.5 million. This means that the AFA’s annual budget will be maintained at nearly its highest point in 10 years.
The AFA Board of Directors will meet later this spring to discuss the 2018-19 budget and confirm its spending plan.
Alberta’s investment in the AFA will help to sustain and grow the sector, and ensures Albertans and visitors to our province can experience and enjoy the vibrancy of Alberta culture and creativity. Economic conditions continue to improve in Alberta. At the same time, the AFA is keenly aware of the difficulties artists and arts organizations have faced in recent years.
Last year, when the government increased funding for the AFA by $5 million, we responded by targeting increases to many of our programs. We sought to increase funding for as many of our stakeholders as possible.
The AFA’s priorities remain to support access, excellence, and sustainability of Alberta’s arts sector according to our strategic plan. We will continue to listen and respond to the needs of our community.
We recognize the Government of Alberta for protecting its investment in the AFA this year. It signals acknowledgement of the important contributions made by our arts community to Alberta’s culture sector and Albertans’ quality of life.
The vitality of Alberta’s arts and culture sector is a source of pride for Albertans and an attraction for visitors and investment. We are proud to contribute vital support on behalf of the Government of Alberta, and to continue to promote Alberta’s arts community.
